Documentary Analysis

I have chosen to analyze a documentary of historic genre "The Birth of Israel". In this documentary analysis, I will be writing about the 4 main technical aspects :Mise-en-scene, Cinematography, Sound and Editing, and how the director has used this techniques to attract the audience. 

This documentary is the production and direction of BBC. 




This documentary starts with the long shot of sun setting which connotes the end of day and the new beginning, the music used in the background is Israeli song which lasts for few seconds. It cuts to the Mosque where the rule of third is used and has been edited. The image is in black and white whereas the mosque is in yellow color which connotes brightness and religious. The title sequence- logo of the BBC is shown in Bold letters. The non-diegetic voiceover of Jeremy Bowen "60 years ago......fighting ever since"
 is used to inform the history of Israel because it helps the audience to solve the puzzle of images. From the long shot of the location of Israel fades in to extreme shot to show the beautiful location to keep the audience interested. The editing technique juxtaposition is used to show the shots of Israel's past in black and white which helps the audience differentiate between past and the future. The title of the documentary "The Birth of Israel" is written in Black bold letters. The scene cuts to the tracking movement of Gaza city to entertain the audience. The scene again cuts to the close up shot of the birds following with the tracking shot of man. It cuts back to few people who are busy in their daily life to involve the audience with the attachment of daily life. 
The voice over continues informing the history of Israel.The scene cuts to the high angle and medium shot  to show that the 


refugees are hurt while protesting to show the truth of the real life to audience. The close up shot of the damaged wall and blood is used to connote the death, danger. The scene cuts to the medium close up shot of the flag which connotes patriotic. The non-diegetic music is used for a while. The voice over continues with the close up shot of the missile which has been landed 2miles north to Gaza to show the destruction of war to audience. It also connotes that the many culture and heritage has been destructed. The scene cuts to long shot of the farm which was found in 1930 to show the the preservation of Israel's heritage. The scene cuts to the long shot of people who are busy on their daily life which shows how the humans survived. The scene continues with the diegetic dialogue

"These are the forms of life..."of Shimon Peres which has used rule of thirds with medium shot which is the perfect way to frame the interview. The diegetic dialogue of Hazem Nusseibeh continues with the rule of thirds. The scene cuts to the juxtaposition shots of the cultural heritage which has been blend. The interview of Noah Kligger starts with the diegetic dialogue and medium shot using rule of thirds. The diegetic sound of the gun fire and the blast of bombs continues with the medium long shot of the armies in war. The scene continues with the diegetic dialogue of Jeremy Bowen.
